COMPANY HISTORY

Stanley Construction Company, Inc. was established in 1961 by Thornton Stanley as Stanley’s Landscaping.   As a recent graduate of Alabama  A & M University, with a degree in Agriculture with emphasis on horticulture, Mr. Stanley’s early projects were landscape design and installation.

Having started with only three employees, the company grew, was incorporated in the 1970’s, and commercial asphalt and concrete services were added to the project mix.

In 2001, the company was honored in a White House ceremony by President George W. Bush, as Thornton Stanley won the award for the SBA Small Businessperson Of the Year, chosen from state winners in all  50 states.  The company has also won 2 best project awards from the Association of General Contractors of Alabama, and in 2019, Mr. Stanley was elected to the AGC Alabama Hall Of Fame.

Today, Stanley Construction offers civil engineering design, demolition, development and site services including mass excavation, utilities, asphalt and concrete installation.  Now in the second generation of management, the family-owned business has completed numerous commercial projects, as well as state and federal facilities.

STANLEY is among the top 5 civil construction contractors in North Alabama, and also operates in Southern Tennessee.

Thornton Stanley founded Stanley’s Landscaping and Construction Company in 1961, and was an active participant in the North Alabama community, including chairing the Top of Alabama Regional Council of Government, chairing the Deacon Board at Progressive Union Missionary Baptist Church, and being honored as the 2001 US SBA Small Businessperson of the year.   A member of the AGC-Alabama Hall of Fame, Mr. Stanley enjoyed site construction, road building, and cattle farming until his health declined.

A mentor to many and friend to all that he met, Thornton's legacy was cemented by his work ethic, can do attitude, and belief that everyone deserved the opportunity to work to better the lives of their family.
